Review

I read somewhere that Captain Marvel is like an origin story told in reverse.  That does work to a degree.  Carol/Vers starts the movie already having superpowers.  The film then takes us on a journey backwards through her past to find out how she got those powers and to discover who she really is.  It works and is a fresh way to introduce (yet another) hero into the MCU.

The action and story of Captain Marvel are good.  And they are what you would expect in any Marvel movie at this point.  It's fun to see certain characters and items from other movies reappear.  This story takes place in 1995 and we get to see Agent Coulson, Ronan the Accuser, and Korath (the latter two were in Guardians of the Galaxy ... if it is getting hard to keep track).  While Captain Marvel can stand alone as a film, I like how it also ties in to the story line of this universe.

You may have heard that one of the best characters in the film is Goose the cat.  You heard correctly.  Goose is cute, cuddly, and awesome.  And the way young Nick Fury takes to him is terrific.  I'd love to see a Marvel Short about Goose.

I also love Fury's character in this film.  We have a younger and less jaded/cynical Fury.  And his banter with both Goose and Carol really carry the film.

I also really liked Ben Mendelsohn's character, the Skrull Thalos.

But my favorite character was, appropriately, Carol Danvers (aka Vers).  Maybe it's because she has the sort of sense of humor I appreciate (and sometimes wish I had if I could quip that quickly).  I like that she is strong but also feels out of place and lost.  She's confident and clever, but still has a few things to learn from her friends.  And she glows, flies, and can plow through a spaceship on her own.  So yeah, I'm a fan of Captain Marvel and am excited to see what she brings to the MCU.  I also look forward to her interacting with the other characters, like Captain America.

Although I wouldn't say the movie is perfect, I also can't think of anything I'd actually change about it.  I enjoyed the movie from start to finish (and to post-credits finish).

The film is rated PG-13 for the same levels of superhero violence you'd see in other MCU movies.  I don't recall much swearing.

Captain Marvel is another fun and exciting superhero film.  It may not bring anything new to the genre in terms of the story, but it brings new characters and sheds new light on old characters.  If you enjoy superhero movies at all, I recommend Captain Marvel.  It's not perfect, but it is still a great time at the movies.  Be sure to stay through the credits.  There's a mid-credits scene (which is the one you'd expect) and a post-credits scene (which is just funny).

So that's how Nick Fury lost his eye?  Huh.  It works.

Also, I love that Fury adopts Goose.

There's a moment in Wonder Woman where Diana crosses No Man's Land.  You might say it is her "a hero rises" moment.  Captain Marvel has its own version.  It isn't quite as powerful, but it is nonetheless well done, good, and inspiring.  I have dubbed it the "You're only human" scene.  And it did kinda make me want to cheer: for Carol, for women, for humans in general.

Quotable Quotes

  • "You watched me play with tape when all you had to do was that?" "I didn't want to steal your thunder." -- Fury and Carol
  • "You called this in?!" "My bad." -- Carol and Fury
  • "It's a cat, not Hannibal Lecter." -- Fury, as someone muzzles Goose
  • "Without us, you're only human." -- Kree Supreme Intelligence
